A thing is defined by its essence. In order to design it so that it functions well – a receptacle, a chair, a house – its essence must first be explored; it should serve its purpose perfectly, that is, fulfill its function practically and be durable, inexpensive and ‘beautiful’.
Walter Gropius, 1925
The above quote by Walter Gropius, a founder of the Bauhaus design movement can also be said of garden design.
Too often fashions and trends in garden design determine the nature of our outside spaces. These spaces then inevitably become dated and must then be ‘updated’ in some manner, and so an expensive cycle is created.
Although people’s lives and needs change, on a basic level the outside space around your home will remain the same.
Updating or an outright change of the planting altogether in a garden can completely change the atmosphere if need be. But an initial well thought out functional design appropriate to the space and surrounding environment, will for all intensive purposes last forever.
